Biography
Appointed Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers by President Clinton in 1995, Joseph Stiglitz took office as Chief Economist to the World Bank in February 1997, stepping down in January 2000. Currently on leave from Stanford University where he is the Joan Kenney Professor of Economics. Dr. Stiglitz was appointed Professor of Economics at Yale University at the age of 26. He was Vice President of the American Economic Association 1985-1997 and is founding editor of AEA’s Journal of Economic Perspectives. He has also held the Drummond Chair in Political Economy at All Souls College, Oxford.
Joseph Stiglitz obtained his B.A. from Amherst College and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He taught the Principle of Economics and gave graduate courses in macroeconomics, microeconomics and the economics of the public sector at Stanford University. A leading academic and pioneer in the field of the application of Economic theories Joseph Stiglitz helped create the new branch of Economics the Economics of Information.
Acknowledged as a leading economic educator in the US and elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society Dr. Stiglitz has received international recognition winning the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2001. He has been elected a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy. Amongst others he received the International Prize from the Academia Lincei (Italy), a honorary doctorate from the University of Leuven (1994) and the UAP Scientific Prize awarded in Paris in 1989.
